The Hair of the Dog is a hare scramble-like event that is held each year on New Year's Day by the Boise Ridge Riders. This event has been going on for over 30 years. Bring your Christmas trees for firewood.
Members, riders, and spectators rise early and head out to Little Gem Cycle Park no matter what the weather conditions are that day. A simple yet often snowy or slick short course is marked off it varies between 2-4 miles based on the energy of our volunteers who actually showed up in these conditions.
Noon is a dead engine start and there are many shenanigans including tires with screws for traction, costumes, nap breaks, goggle and gear changes, and a snow bike rider even won once. The riders go for one hour and the leader is white-flagged for one more lap. We simply mark the number of laps and the lap leader is the overall winner. The overall winner takes a commemorative photo with the attendees. Someday the winners' name and year is engraved on the perpetual plaque.
After the race a BRR member cooks chili, smoked meat, or something amazing to eat. The kids sled down the hills. The dogs run and play. Everyone shares stories and linger until they have had their fill. Boise Ridge Riders make a donation each year to a local non-profit to celebrate and share the gratitude of the off-road community.
